Why use this tool?
Let me start with a story:
My dog Jake is 14 years old. I have had him since I was 10. At his yearly checkup his veterinarian heard a heart murmur and was concerned that Jake had something wrong with his heart. We had thoracic radiographs taken, but they weren’t confident in their ability to read them to determine what was wrong. I had the option of paying $150 to hear back in 2-3 days, or paying $250 to hear back sometime today. Being a vet student, I could barely afford the $150, not to mention paying an extra $100. I stressed for 3 days not knowing what was wrong with Jake. Several days later, the report came back saying his heart was enlarged and suggested that he had Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease (MMVD). I was almost angry that we hadn’t started treatment right away.
I disliked this whole experience and went to my fiancé, Tomas, to say that we need to fix it. With his skills in Machine Learning and Web/Mobile App Development, we put together RadAnalyzer to solve this problem. Our goal is to provide VHS/VLAS scores to the veterinarian in seconds, not days. By simply uploading the radiograph to our website, you can either manually tag the image with guided examples, or use our soon-to-be-released automatic tagging system to get your VHS/VLAS scores in under 15 seconds. The need to send of radiographs to be examined by a specialist for heart concerns is gone. We are putting the power back in the hands of the veterinarians, but putting the information they need to make an accurate diagnosis right in the palm of their hands.
Our VHS/VLAS app is very quick and easy. Whether using the manual version or the automatic version, the process is simple. In the manual version, all it takes is locating 7 landmarks. If you aren’t sure of what the text description of the landmarks is, there are pictures to show you what the landmarks look like on example images! Feeling confident about your results is good! This is why we show images of where to click. VHS is so important in keeping track of the progression of heart disease. During our customer discovery every single veterinarian said that VHS is important in monitoring heart disease, and that they would love a tool that could help them calculate VHS to track progression accurately and reliably. There are many studies, both historic and current in Cardiology about the importance of VHS is prescribing medication and tracking the progression of diseases such as Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease (MMVD) and Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). We are looking to help veterinarians calculate this value instead of needing to rely on sending radiographs off to specialists. We are looking to save the large costs of quick turn around times for specialists to look at thoracic radiographs, without losing the key information of knowing that you need to start treatment now. Even if there are more concerns than just heart disease, you can take comfort in the fact that identifying enlarged hearts will always be easy with RadAnalyzer.
